The new Chicopee school is a Massachusetts Chapter 766-approved school, and its staff members include certified special education teachers, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and other specialists. The May Center School provides day educational services for children and adolescents. Educational programming is based upon the principles of ABA and includes individually-designed instruction, the use of positive reinforcement, teaching in small steps, assessing the function of problem behaviors, and the regular review of data on student performance. Typical goals include communication, social interactions, basic learning skills, independence, and academics. Speech, occupational, and physical therapy are available to students. Vocational and employment training are provided based on individual needs. Ongoing family support and training are also available. The brand new school has large classrooms with small group and larger group instructional areas, a new outdoor play space, computer lab, fully functional apartment, school store, nursing offices, library, gymnasium and meeting rooms.
