The Community Therapeutic Day School, founded in 1974, serves children with emotional and neurological difficulties that interfere with their learning. These children may be impacted by hyperactivity, social isolation, affective disorders, autistic defenses, atypical development, distracting fantasies, speech and language delays, behavioral disorders, and motor and sensory integration. Many also have difficulty with developing appropriate social relationships. We try to discern if the basis of the disability is emotional, physical, neurologic, medical, linguistic, environmental or some combination of factors. Overwhelming feelings may affect the child’s overall functioning. The child may have specific organic challenges such as vision, hearing, sensory motor, or language processing. Some children have experienced trauma due to their early history or because of the complexity of their challenges and the difficulty of being in the world. Our children have a wonderful array of strengths and talents. At CTDS we support the whole child.
