Workshop on Preventing Physical and Sexual Abuse in maaps Schools

The recent articles in the Boston Globe about sexual abuse victims from private, independent preparatory schools coming forward after years of silence is disturbing. These articles raise many questions about the oversight of school administration, supervision of students and organizational culture that fostered secrecy and victimization.

maaps has put together a day-long workshop to assist our members in answering these questions for their own schools and to re-examine practices and policies that help reduce instances of physical and sexual abuse in schools.

Date:               July 19, 2016

Agenda:          8:00 Registration

8:30 Presentation by Meg Stone, Impact Boston

11:30 Lunch on your own

12:30 Presentation from the maaps perspective for and by members

3:15 Adjourn

Location:        Best Western, Marlborough, MA

Ms. Stone’s remarks focus on four key areas to examine for effective abuse prevention in schools:

  • Official policies (touch, staff/student individual time together, whistleblowers)
  • Training and staff development (what is abuse, 51 A, trauma response, physiological reaction to inappropriate behavior by others, challenging conversations)
  • Organizational culture (strengths and weaknesses that are unique to each school and how they may detract from or contribute to abuse prevention)
  • Student safety (teaching self-protection tools, self-advocacy)

The afternoon session focuses on the nuts and bolts of the implementation of the key areas in the context of maaps member schools.  There will be an opportunity to share experiences, policies, procedures and curricula for student safety.

Fee:     $55.00 members          $105 non-members
